What is Prompt Master? The free Claude skill that writes better prompts

Short answer

Prompt Master is a Claude skill that rewrites a vague request into a structured prompt for a specific AI tool. It works out what you are really asking for, asks up to three questions if something critical is missing, picks a prompt format that suits the target tool and returns one prompt you can paste straight in.

Fewer wasted attempts, because the first prompt already says what the tool needs to hear.

How Prompt Master works

• It detects the target tool, for example Claude Code, Cursor or Midjourney
• It extracts nine dimensions of intent: task, input, output, constraints, context, audience, memory, success criteria and examples
• It asks at most three clarifying questions, and only when critical information is missing
• It silently chooses one of 14 templates, such as CO-STAR, RISEN or ReAct with stop conditions
• It removes 37 known “credit-killing” patterns, like vague goals or missing success criteria
• In longer conversations it adds a memory block, so new prompts do not contradict earlier decisions

Which AI tools does it write prompts for?

For tools that are not on its list, it falls back to four general questions about the tool.

Before and after

• “help me with my code” becomes “Refactor getUserData() to use async/await and handle null returns”
• “make it better” becomes a clear finish line: “Done when the function passes the existing unit tests and handles null input”
• “build my entire app” is split into separate prompts for scaffolding, features and polish
• “a portrait of a woman” gains style details and negative prompts, such as no watermark and no blur

How to install Prompt Master

• On claude.ai (recommended by the author): download the GitHub repository as a ZIP, then go to Customize, Skills and Upload a skill
• In Claude Code: clone the repository into ~/.claude/skills/prompt-master
• Use it by asking for a prompt in plain words, for example “write me a Cursor prompt to refactor the auth module”, or by typing /prompt-master

Limits to keep in mind

• It is a community skill, not an Anthropic product, so read its files before installing it, as with any skill
• The token and credit savings are the author's claims; the project does not publish benchmarks
• It only activates when you ask for a prompt, so it will not change your normal chats or coding work
